Introduction

The Low Frequency Underwater Locator Device (LF-ULD) is a self-powered device that provides an effective help in order to improve the search and recovery of submerged aircraft. The LF-ULD is not to be confused with the ULD, also known as Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB) that is installed on the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) as well as the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and emits ultrasonic impulses at 37.5 kHz. The LF-ULD will be mounted directly at the structure of the airframe and supplements the existing ULDs. Once the LF-ULD is emerged into water, it is being activated automatically and transmits at frequency of 8.80 kHz. Due to its lower frequency range the LF-ULD has a far longer detection range of at least 90 days after activation.

Your needs

In accordance with the EASA Air-OPS CAT.IDE.285 all aircraft with a MCTOM (Maximum Certified Take-Off Mass) of more than 27,000 kg and cargo aircraft with a MCTOM more than 45,500 kg shall be fitted with a LF-ULD if the aircraft is operated over routes which are away from the shore with a greater distance of 180 NM. This mandate is required for subjected aircraft by 1 January 2019 at the latest.

The ICAO requirements define the long range when operating the aircraft (MCTOM > 27,000 kg) over water as traveling time exceeding 120 min at cruise speed or 400 NM off the shore.

In order to be eligible entering the FAA airspace with larger aircraft (maximum take-off mass over 27,000 kg), a LF-ULD based on the minimum performance standard of SAE AS 6254 (TS0-200/ETSO-C200) is not required.

Product Description

The Low-Frequency Underwater Locator Device (LF-ULD) is an underwater acoustic beacon housed in a watertight aluminium case. The beacon is capable of operation at depths of up to 6096 m (20.000 feet), withstands extreme environmental conditions and high G-impact shock. The beacon transmits on 8.80 KHz at an acoustic output of 160 dB underwater. The integrated battery will sustain beacon operation for a minimum of ninety (90) days. The beacon operation is initiated upon immersion and following activation of the water switch in either fresh or salt water. The LF-ULD is completely self-contained and has no interfaces to other aircraft systems.

A Lithium battery with a life span of 6 years supplies the power to the beacon. The battery operates at the transport temperature range from -55°C to 70° C.

The LF-ULD is located on the left side of the aircraft behind the sidewall lining in the Bulk Cargo Compartment. It is installed with screws, washers and nuts on a dedicated bracket. The water switch points in flight direction.

LHT’s modification comprises the installation of mounting structure and adapter plate as well as the installation of LF-ULD.

Upon customer decision, one of the following LF-ULDs can be installed:

  • Dukane Seacom DK180 LF-ULD (complies SAE Specification AS6254A, TSO-C200a, ARINC 677 standard)

  • Novega SID88 LF-ULD (complies SAE Specification AS6254A, TSO-C200a, ARINC 677 standard)
